Burning Nero DVD-ROM book type

Hi Folks. I've read that the DVD-ROM book type is the most compatable way to burn, playable in almost any player.

So... I tried to use Nero to burn a previously saved .iso image I had made, using the DVD-ROM book type. An "options" area allowed me to set the book type.

Yet, the resultant disk wouldn't play on *anything*!! Clearly I'm missing something. I'm running Nero v7 Ultra Edition (the whole she-bang). What's the trick?

It was my understanding that setting the book type only applied to DVD+R media (and not to DVD-R media). I assume you are using DVD+R media.

I am a Nero and DVD+R media user. I allows create DVD with book type = DVD-ROM and have first hand experience that it does make a real difference with player compatibility (e.g., with older DVD players).

Whether you can control the book type on a DVD is also a function of your DVD writer. Some allow user control (via a special applications or via burning programs like Nero), some do not, and some simply default to DVD-ROM booktypes. I'm not sure the book type control situation is with your particular DVD writer. If you are not sure visit http://www.cdrlabs.com/ where their reviews typical discuss book type control.

Is there an advantage to using Nero and setting book type vs. just using DVDA?

DVDA doesn't set the book type, it leaves it at the default DVD-R or DVD+R. The reason for changing the book type is that a LOT of players out there are physically capable of reading and playing just about any disk, but to play it safe the designers have them check the book type and make adjustments if it's not DVD-ROM, or sometimes even refuse to play a disc that isn't DVD-ROM even if it could play it.

By changing the book type to DVD-ROM, most players will assume your disc is a standard DVD just like you'd buy a movie on and simply, well ... play it.

I should have asked this also: CAN DVDA set the book type to DVD-ROM and would anyone recommend doing so?

I thought that setting the book type to DVD-ROM was something you did in your burner, and once you had set it using whatever utility you used to do it, the burner would burn to the DVD-ROM booktype no matter what burning program was used. E.g., you would set your burner to burn DVD-R as DVD-ROM booktype, and the burner would burn anything burned to a DVD-R as DVD-ROM booktype. I.e., the booktype is not something that is set by the burning program (unless the burning program contains a utility to do so), and in any event, setting the booktype is done independently from a burn.

I believe I set my NEC to burn both DVD-R and DVD+R as DVD-ROM booktype.

It's been a while since I set it up, so I could be wrong....

nolo - If you are correct, that would be very cool. I looked under Device Manager at the properties of the Sony DRU-710A burner, and there doesn't seem to be a way (there) set this.

For the BOLD and BRAVE - you can try good old REGEDIT!

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/ahead/Nero - Burning ROM/Recorder/SONY DVD RW DRU-710A/BookType

0=match the loaded media
1=DVD-ROM

Success! After trying with a DVD+R blank, I had no problems burning booktype/bitsetting DVD-ROM. Apparently that's the "trick". See, you learn something everyday (or try to). THanks to all, -H

I don't have the option to change book-type in Nero or the registry. I have a DRU-710A & have the version of nero installed that came with the burner. Really pissed me of with THAT oem version because a) it only works with my DRU-710A (while my HD DVD+RW drive's Nero worked with my CD burner too) & b) they took out the booktype setting in the nero options (again, the HP version let me change that).

How can I change the book type w/o buying another copy of nero?
